Zappas most recent work released in November is “Envisioning The Future Of Finance” (see pic below). A highly appropriate topic area considering the world revolves around the economy! Within this work Zappa explores the advancement and integration of technology within the financial sector. He has once again managed to break complex data structures into a systematic awesome looking information graphic. Focusing on the industries level of preparation in relation to ‘data, automation, security, disintermediation, crowds, mobile, currencies and reputation’, processes such as virtual economies and currencies.

Envisioning Technology, a trend forecaster, has created a visualisation of the future of technology, offering predictions for when we can expect various new developments, from robot manservants to retinal huds, to appear. Though it covers the gamut, a broad cross-section directly affects videogames, so here’s a tour of what shape we can expect games to take over the next 20 years.

A futurist map of disruptive healthcare technology of the future offers a stunning projection of what will be possible. What’s interesting is that much of it is already beginning to take shape in some form or another.

What I fundamentally appreciate about this type of visualization is its attempt to reflect in some form — especially in capturing a macro view that understands both trees and forests — the relatedness, interconnectivity and otherwise dynamic interactions between elements that are otherwise seen disparately.

Inviting unorthodox thinkers like Michell is quintessential to the event’s success. So seeing that I had Michell in front of me, I asked him if we could have a casual chat about futurology, corporate copycatting and his non-obvious approach to predicting the future of technology…
September 12, 2012
When science fiction films depict the future, the best writers and directors are often less concerned with accurately prediction how specific technologies might reshape the world than they are with confronting the moral or philosophical quandaries of present day. It’s what makes those stories compelling–and relatable. When futurists attempt to tell us how (and when) technology leaps will occur, they’re not only speculating about what we’re capable of achieving in the coming decades but also imploring us to prepare–scientifically and psychologically–for those events.

Add this massive infographic to the recent discussion of futuristic dorms and what education will look like in 2020–and beyond. Designed by Michell Zappa’s Envisioning Technology (which also created that fantastic interactive infographic mapping the future of technology), this chart maps innovations in education technology for the next few decades.
For just a second, let’s stop thinking about the future of medicine in terms of post-healthcare reform and post-2012 election.Let’s think like emerging technology strategist Michell Zappa did when he put together a graphic based on what major technologies he sees — by “looking at emerging trends and research”
From synthetic blood to space tourism, these technologies aren’t just indicators of emerging products and markets, they also reflect our cultural mores — in other words, what we hope our future will look like.
Zappa’s graphic offers a fascinating glimpse into not just what’s coming down the pipes, but also into how the timing timing of these advancements will co-incide with each other. [...] And after a quick glance, it’s clear that Zappa has done his homework; his predictions are pretty spot on — and quite exciting. A rundown of some technologies we can expect to see include:

Tech trend forecasting firm Envisioning Technology has put together a beautiful infographic that examines current scientific and technological research and predicts when in the next 28 years possible innovations might become reality. The graphic, titled “Envisioning Emerging Technology For 2012 And Beyond,” separates breakthroughs into 11 categories — artificial intelligence, Internet, robotics and space, to name a few — and lets users hover over each item to see more information.
As some of you may know, Envisioning Technology‘s founder Michell Zappa will be participating in TNW Conference Latin America this August, for what promises to be a very stimulating keynote on emerging technologies. To give you a taste of what to expect, we asked him a few questions on his work and vision.

There is an amazing visualisation on Emerging Technologies highlighting areas of STEM with some truly extraordinary predictions. Envisioning Tech’s blog is currently featuring “Sci-fi Scaffolds”, scenarios situated in the near future and based on emerging technologies. Spend a bit of time on this site and I guarantee you will be thinking about the future in a whole new way.

As an educational technology scholar I seldom find something related to the field that completely blows me away. The Envisioning Technology website which features the predictive visualizations of emerging technology strategist Michell Zappa and his team of researchers is one of the few Internet sites that contains information that is so insightful, forward-thinking, fascinating, and intellectually stimulating that it can be hard to comprehend.
I’ve been very critical of the snail-like implementation of “technology-as-a-tool” in education. I continue to be impressed with educators at all levels who embrace the ubiquity of the Internet, devices, and developments to enhance, enrich and strengthen student learning. I admire administrators that allow staff to experiment and safely risk making those changes.

Thanks to the hard work by Envisioning Tech, it’s simple to see what we could expect to happen in the next few decades. From today’s iPads to holograms in the year 2040, there’s a lot coming to a classroom near you. Better still, the visualization below is categorized into color-coded topics. This is one of the most impressive visualizations / infographics I’ve ever seen (and I get like 5-10 every day, so that’s actually saying something) and hope you enjoy it as well.

Kind words by MSNBC’s Melissa Harris-Perry about my visuals for Ayesha & Parag Khanna’s Hybrid Reality book.

Zappa has visually represented his extensive research and analysis quite beautifully using a simple taxonomy using colour, size and shapes to distinguish between levels within ‘relative importance’, ‘consumer impact’ and ‘clusters of technologies’. Also having the ability to read definitions of each technology is handy when trying to understand exactly what “programmable matter’ is and prompt the cogs of thought to churn.

What developments will the next 30 years hold in the fields of AI, biotech, robotics, computing, the internet, materials science and more besides? That’s the question Michell Zappa, technology strategist and founder of trend forecasting firm Envisioning Technology, asked himself – and here is his response: a striking, concise infographic which outlines a range of probable developments, and their likely significance for society.

Granted, futurists in the late 1800s predicted that big cities would soon be knee deep in horse manure because they didn’t foresee the growth of the automobile, but looking at the road ahead is still a very important exercise, not just for helping companies figure out what might be coming (and therefore where to focus their resources and attention), but for helping engage the public—for guiding public policy development, getting kids excited about science, and more.

The fact is that digital technology is growing at such a substantial rate, it’s difficult to visualise it over the next 5, 10 or 20 years. Until now that is. The technology strategist Michell Zappa (who heads up the tech strategists Envisioning Technology) has created a visualisation of the next 28 years in technology.

This extremely well researched infographic dimensionalizes a lot of emerging tech to help you size your big bets. I so thoroughly loved this I spent an hour on it – by accident. However, I learned so much I forgave its uber-talented author. Michell Zappa focuses on delivering a real perspective of technology across a 40-year horizon for eleven categories and three key dimensions…

Virtual Reality-only lifeforms will be a reality by 2025, the importance of self-driving vehicles will outweigh their novelty by 2019, and petabytes of storage will become standard by 2024. That’s according to a set of predictions collated by Michell Zappa and first posted on his site Envisioning Technology.
